Ref stops game short, Itu O Tane unstoppable
The referee had to prematurely stop Itu o Tane College U18 Girls' last match at the Laumua o Punaoa field on Tuesday as the Itu o Tane girls kept piling points after points over Falealili College in the BSP Schools Championship.
It was more than a statement by the Savaii girls as they led Falealili College 56-0. The Upolu team barely got to touch the ball as every play by Itu o Tane resulted in a try. Even the referee felt sorry for the opposing team as he blew the whistle before full time.
Itu o Tane captain Upu Talavini could not control her excitement as they ended their first day of the Prime Minister's Cup on a high. She said there was still a lot to do but that will come later.
"Our last game was quite an easy one. We came with a game plan and we executed it on the field. We all put it out there on the field, we came all the way from Savaii intending to return with the Cup. So this is just the beginning, we are just getting started," she said.
"We made a few mistakes today, which is something we will go back and work on for our next matches. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done and some game plan that we did not execute quite well.
"It's been a great first day so far. We are excited for what lies ahead. We came prepared for whatever comes our way. We understand the competition is tough. We are not perfect but we continue to play our hearts out as we know our district, families, friends, and Savaii are also supporting us from back home. But our goal is to win the Cup for Savaii."
Itu o Tane College principal Allie Faletolu was very proud of his students' efforts on day one. He also acknowledged the Vaimea College principal for hosting them at his school.
"We are being accommodated by Vaimea Primary, we are grateful and blessed for these good Samaritans. We received assistance from Lakapi Samoa but as a principal, I know it is not enough to cover all our expenses. So we fundraised for this one-week trip with the assistance of the parents, district, and our donors," he said.
"We arrived here on Sunday and we will also leave on Sunday. We are here for a purpose and today's games were evident of the hard work put in by our students and teachers. Looking forward to the outcome of this tournament."
In the boys division, Paauli, Aleipata, Itu O Tane 2, Vaimauga 2, Faleata 1, Vaimauga 1, and Faaseleleaga 2 finished on top of their pools.
In the girls division, Palauli, Aana 1, Safata 2, Faaseleleaga 1, Lepa/Lotofaga, Vaimauha 1, and Faaseleleaga 2 topped their pools.
Wednesday will be the final day of competition. The main finals are scheduled for 2.45 pm at Moataa for the boys and Vaimauga College for the girls.
