Sally looks forward to Pago leg
Local angler Sally Olafaatasi Asafo is now the record holder for the Biggest Fish caught category. She caught the biggest fish on the last day of the competition in the Samoa International Gamefishing Tournament.
She is from the village of Apia. According to Sally, she has been fishing for a long time and her love for the ocean has pushed her to work on fishing boats.
"It's been more than 20 years now since I've been doing fishing professionally. I've always loved the ocean, and I didn't want to work anywhere else other than on a fishing boat. For me, when you're out there, it's like you're in your zone," she said.
"I am so happy about the award I got, and I broke the record that was there before. When I caught the biggest fish, I was quite emotional. And for this year, I am representing the team from American Samoa but I am from Samoa," she said.
Sally said some people viewed gamefishing as a man's sport but to her, it isn't. She believes that anyone can do it.
"It's a waiting game. After four days of fishing, we caught two fish. And yesterday (Friday) we were blessed with a big one. Yes, we caught the biggest fish of the tournament. You just have to have faith and patience and not be scared to be involved in a fishing club. But I am happy now that there are a lot of female anglers compared to 20 years ago."
Sally also mentioned that if you fear ocean, then fishing isn't for you. She has already set her goal for the next leg in American Samoa which is to catch a big fish. She also confirmed her participation in the Tongan leg as well.
