Weightlifting smashes 20 records

The Samoa Weightlifting team rewrote the history books as the curtain closed on the Oceania International Cup in Melbourne Australia on Sunday. 

Samoa concluded with a total of 13 gold medals, three silver medals, and three bronze medals. They have also created 18 new Oceania records and two Commonwealth records.

President of Samoa Weightlifting, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork was very proud of his team's achievements and believes that this is one of the best teams he had ever taken to any Oceania Championships.

"Recalling 30 years, this is the best-performing team ever in the history of Samoa sports team participating at an Oceania Championships. Our final results from yesterday at the Oceania International Cup 2025, Avatu Opeloge won gold medal in the Women's 77kgs. Lesila Fiapule with a gold medal and setting the new record for the Oceania Senior for the Women's Snatch 111kgs," he said. 

"Iuniarra Sipaia with a silver medal in the Women's 86+ kgs and setting the new Oceania record in the Clean and Jerk with a 150kg lift. Jack Opeloge also claimed the Men's 110kgs and set a new Commonwealth Record and Oceania record with a 207kgs clean and jerk."

"Maeu Nanai Livi claimed a silver Medal in the Men's 110kgs and set the new record for Oceania with a 166kg snatch. Sanele Mao claimed a gold medal in the Men's 110+ kg and set three new records for Oceania in the Snatch, Clean and Jerk, plus total."

Samoa also won the trophy for the 'Best Team'. The best lifter trophy went to John Tafi and second best lifter went to Sanele Mao.

The second part of our trip is the Oceania Elite training camp until Friday 18 April where the team will return in the evening to Samoa."
