'Let's fight': Jai Opetaia
Jai Opetaia is back in Samoa while he waits for his next fight against Italian Claudio Squeo on May 13 on the Gold Coast as talks continue for the blockbuster unification bout with star Mexican Gilberto "Zurdo'' Ramirez.
Opetaia is in Samoa and he told Samoa Observer that he was ready to face anyone. He said his focus is on winning fights regardless of the opponent. He said he was not concerned about who he fights.
Opetaia will have to wait to unify his world boxing title belts, but he has pledged not to underestimate his next opponent in what the Australian has labelled a "stay busy" fight.
IBF and The Ring cruiserweight champion Opetaia (27-0) - Samoa's current pound-for-pound No.1 - will face unbeaten Squeo (17-0).
Ramirez holds the WBA and WBO straps and Opetaia has been desperate to fight for them, having been unable to secure any unification bouts since winning his titles three years ago.
When asked if he would take up the challenge to face Oleksandr Usyk, the boxer did not flinch and said if that fight comes, he will take it.
"Whether I fight Ramirez, Usyk, Dmitri, or whoever, I just have to win. We have just locked in a fight in May. I just have to keep winning and the opportunity will come," Opetaia said.
"I've heard a few rumours as well, (Ramirez's response) but there's nothing confirmed yet. But I'm hoping very soon we get to one of the unification fights. The WBC belt holder, if he wants to fight, let's fight. I've been chasing this WBO for quite a while, so I just really want to tick that box.
"Once we've unified the division, then we can take on the heavyweights for sure. I'm ready for any fights. When it comes to my job, it's pretty simple. I just train hard and win fights. Anyone who they put in front of me, that's who I'm fighting."
Opetaia credited his father Tapu Opetaia who is also his coach for his success. He said his father's support was important for him.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, Opetaia was at the Marist Boxing Club through the Marist St Joseph's Sports Club to assist with the development of boxing in Samoa. He provided some training gear as he believes in the potential of local athletes.
"Last time we came, a couple of weeks ago, we noticed there wasn't much gear but there was a lot of potential. Being here to make this donation to help them move forward in the right direction is important. These are just baby steps, the donation is one thing but it's the time and effort that shows we do care," said Opetaia.
The Marist St Joseph's Sports Club president Lemalu John Lemisio expressed gratitude towards the generous donation.
