Once again, it was the Wesley College defence that handed them the win the U18 boys final over Palauli College. Both schools were tied 22-22 in the last minute. In the final play, an intercept from Wesley landed their first-five eight on the left side of the uprights, handing them the 27 - 22 win.
Wesley College U18 boys head coach, Reverend Matavai Schuster, said it has been a long time coming for Wesley College.
"It's been 24 years since Wesley won any championship games, the last time was in 2001 when it was Sakaria's time. Which means these preparations were not easy for us. The other important thing is, this is the first time we have hosted this event, and Wesley has responded with a great win to remember this," he said.
"On Tuesday when the tournament kicked off, we observe where we lack and where the mistakes were happening, from there we know where to work on for the next game on Thursday. We did not have any heavy training this week, we only used the games to train them and for the days where we have no games, we use it to build up our team and work on our mistakes."
Wesley College are now looking forward to the next tournament. Rev Matavai also acknowledged everyone who went out of their way to support their teams, from the Church, school, parents, and everyone who supported their school teams this year.
