Wallam inspires local talents
Local netballers and selected schools were grateful for the opportunity to learn from the Australian Diamonds and Queensland Firebirds star goal shooter Donnell Wallam.
She came to inspire young local netballers in Samoa and she has done that according to a few netball players interviewed by the newspaper.
Hani Isamaeli a member of the Striders club shared her experience.
"Everything went well. I learned a lot from this netball legend, Donnell Wallam. She showed us different skills in running the ball whether slow or fast, teaching us new drills on how to attack and defend. She also shared her personal story and her journey in the sport," she said.
"But I think the lesson that is now stuck with me is that I should always keep on pushing myself and use my talent. The dream for me is to be able to play in our netball national team one day."
Wallam had the chance to visit Lepa and Lotofaga College, Divine Mercy School and Vaiala Beach School to share skills and knowledge with the local netball community.
Wallam is in Samoa as part of a partnership deal to help promote the sport of netball and hold coaching clinics, she is also promoting their key message of gender equality and inclusion through sport. While embracing the cultural experience and offering her unique perspective as an Indigenous Australian.
Netball Samoa on their social media account acknowledged Wallam, Team Up and Netball Australia for the initiative. It is a great opportunity for Samoa's local talents to learn from the best in the game.
"Wrapping up the second day of our in-country high-profile visit with Donnell Wallam of the Origin Diamonds where clinics were delivered for Lepa and Lotofaga College. These young students had the opportunity to grip on to netball skills and get into the basics of the game," said Netball Samoa.
"Ending the day on a session for our Open Grades where members of our netball community had the chance to learn from Donnell and experience the level of netball that she plays by giving them a good fitness run."
Netball Samoa acknowledged the support and partnership from Netball Australia, Team Up, the Australian High Commission in Samoa, and Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
