Haifa takes on the world
Young Haifa Lynch is ready to step onto the world stage this month to become the first Samoan to be a Jiu-Jitsu world champion.
The 10-year-old will be competing at the World Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Abu Dhabi from 6 November. Haifa takes the mat on 8 November.
Haifa's mother Futi Lynch said her daughter has been preparing for this competition for about five years and dreamt of opening her own Jiu-Jitsu gym in Samoa.
"Her biggest dream is to one day open her own Jiu-Jitsu gym in Samoa, she's been training at a gym called High Rollers Jiu-Jitsu which already hosts multiple world champions for her to train with," she said.
"She's beating grown women in the adult classes daily and travelling all around Sydney from gym to gym to train with all different athletes."
Mrs Lynch said that her daughter's biggest challenge at the moment is her strict diet routine.
"She's been on a strict diet for the past six weeks, no junk or artificial foods at all. It has been her toughest challenge, but she hasn't broken it once," she said.
"She has been fighting up in teenage age brackets all year and dominating the Australian and New Zealand competition scene. She's been preparing for this competition for five years and now she accomplished every major championship in Australia.
"The only thing left for her to do is take on the world."
Haifa is extremely pumped up for the competition.
"She sacrificed so much like playing after school with friends to train and finally has the opportunity to be called the best in the world. She is a little nervous about traveling to Abu Dhabi for the first time. This competition is the biggest Jiu-Jitsu competition in the world."
