Laumua o Tumua rugby club from Afega was named the champions of the first-ever Marist Rugby Sevens Festival after defeating the host team 19 - 0 at Saint Joseph's College, Alafua on Saturday.

Laumua scored two converted first half tries to lead 14-0 at the break. They kept Marist scoreless in the second half with superb defence and added another try to their tally to take the trophy.

The captain for Laumua, Johnny Samuelu was very proud of the team's performance and happy that they finally reached their goal.

"I just want to thank my village for the support. This is the first time Marist Rugby Club has hosted this tournament and we won it. It is definitely a great feeling to be the champions of this event. All glory goes back to the man above," he said.

"It's almost three years since we started our rugby club and we have competed in other tournaments but we've never won. So, this is a huge achievement for me and my team as well as our management."

Samuelu said the rugby level in Samoa was improving and many good upcoming players should be given the focus and start training for the national teams.

For Samuelu he has no plans of trying out for the blue jersey anymore.

"At the moment for me personally, my rugby career will end here with our team but I will still continue to help in the development of rugby and continue to push the young ones and also our team to become the best players they can be."

Taumeasina Island Resort Moataa won the U10 Mix Cup against Striders, 20 - 15.

For the U14, Marist Academy Team 1 defeated Marist Academy Team 2, 19 - 12.
