Three-vehicle crash during peak traffic

A traffic accident involving three small cars and a bus led to collisions around 5pm on Tuesday on the Vaitele road, close to the traffic lights adjacent the Farmer Joe supermarket.

The impact of the collision left a grey coloured Nissan Cube and a small pink car worse-for-wear with both vehicles sporting smashed headlights, dented bonnets and side fenders.

The owner of the pink vehicle, Vaisola Sulufaiga, told the Samoa Observer that luckily no one was hurt in the collision apart from some bruises that her daughter received on her hands.

“The bus came from the eastern side together with the other car (a green Nissan Cube) then the incident took place as we're on our way home,” she said.

“We got back from town, heading home then this happened, one man was driving the green Nissan Cube and what we saw was that they were trying to go through on the other lane at the same time then accidentally collided.”

She added that traffic on the Vaitele road was very busy when the collision between the vehicles occurred.

It is understood a bus, which had passengers travelling to Faleula and Aele, is now at the Police headquarters for further investigation over its role in the traffic accident.

Mrs Sulufaiga together with her husband and daughter were on their way home when the crash occurred. An unidentified man drove the grey Nissan Cube vehicle.

Police officers were at the scene of the collision immediately following the accident, but refused to comment when approached by the Samoa Observer, as they are not authorised to speak to the media.

Last week the Deputy Police Commissioner, Papali’i Monalisa Tiai-Keti, released Ministry of Police and Prisons data which showed that over 600 traffic accidents had occurred since January this year.

She said that a total of 631 traffic incidents has already been recorded on the roads of the country for this year. The latest statistics suggest this number will be easily eclipsed this year.

“We wish to advise the driving public to be careful when driving,” she said.
