In a deeply emotional interview with the Samoa Observer, local musician and songwriter Soa Faletafaoga Pailate Eteru shared his heartfelt reflections on a song that has touched the lives of many.

The song, "Gataula," was a collaboration between Soa and his late brother, Mareko Pailate Eteru.

It tells the rich legends of their village, Asau, and has gained widespread acclaim during the reign of former Miss Samoa, Moemoana Safaatoa Schwenke.

As Soa recounted the journey of "Gataula," he fought back tears, overwhelmed by a sense of pride and humility.

The song, which was a blend of traditional melodies and village stories, unexpectedly rose to prominence when Moemoana chose it for her siva Samoa category during last year’s Miss Samoa pageant.

"We never imagined that it would be used by Moemoana and achieve such fame," Soa said, his voice tinged with emotion.

Moemoana’s choice to dance to "Gataula" was a surprise to Soa and his family.

"It was quite an emotional time for us, especially after my brother passed away. Hearing everyone sing along whenever Moemoana performed, it was a proud moment for us and our family," Soa reflected.

The song’s popularity surged both within Samoa and abroad, with audiences everywhere becoming familiar with its lyrics.

Soa expressed deep gratitude for Moemoana’s acknowledgement of their work, emphasizing the pride the village of Asau feels for her. "We are all so proud of her. She never failed to honour her roots and her origins throughout her reign. Moemoana has contributed greatly to Samoa and our village," Soa noted.

In recognition of Moemoana’s contributions, there is talk within the village of Asau about honouring her with a matai title after her reign. Additionally, Soa composed another song, which Moemoana used to bid farewell as Miss Samoa—a heartfelt tribute to Samoa and a testament to her gratitude.

Soa Faletafaoga Pailate Eteru’s story is a powerful reminder of how music and heritage can unite communities and leave a lasting impact.

The legacy of "Gataula" and the heartfelt contributions of both Soa and Moemoana continue to resonate with people across the globe, celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of Samoa.
