As Moemoana Safaatoa Schwenke prepares to pass the crown of Miss Samoa, she is far from saying goodbye to the island nation she has come to cherish deeply.

Instead, she is gearing up for a new chapter rooted in her homeland, where her heart and ambitions lie.

Reflecting on her journey as Miss Samoa, Moemoana describes her reign as a period of profound connection and growth.

"The highlight of my journey has been the connections I’ve built—both with my roots in Savai'i and with people across Samoa," she told the Samoa Observer.

Her role allowed her to delve into the rich histories of places like Manono and Apolima, basking in the warmth and support of her countrymen.

"It’s indescribable how powerful it is to be loved and supported by your village and your country."

Among the most significant experiences during her tenure has been working with youth. Moemoana is inspired by their potential and believes that their support is crucial for Samoa’s future.

Seeing the potential in our youth and knowing Samoa is in good hands if we continue to support and love them is a highlight," she explains. "Imagine how far they can go if we all work together."

One word she uses to sum up her reign is "generations." Moemoana reflects on the legacy of those who came before her and the future she hopes to build.

"I think about what we can do now for the generations ahead. Samoa must continue to reflect on its past while moving toward the future," she said.

Despite her efforts, Moemoana acknowledges that time was fleeting. She expressed a desire to accomplish even more, though she remains proud of the groundwork she has laid.

"I tried to make the most of every day and impact or serve in some way," she shared.

"I wish I could have done more, but I hope the seeds I've planted will grow into something bigger."

Moemoana is committed to staying in Samoa. Her decision to move back home is driven by a sense of purpose and belonging.

"So I've decided to move here and stay in Samoa," she said with a smile.

"I think, I feel so much more purposeful and free here at home. I was born here and I spent a lot of time overseas, but I think the place where I feel like I most belong and I'm most utilised is back home in Samoa. And I feel loved and supported so much more here.

"The legacy that I want to leave is here in my homeland of Samoa. Nowhere else in the world but here in Samoa."

Her message to the community, especially the youth, is one of self-empowerment and pride.

"Never forget who we are," she urged.

"Sometimes we might look outside for inspiration, but all the inspiration we need is here. We are custodians of the land, the ocean, and some of the most beautiful places in the world. Embrace it.

"And although we come from small islands, we have much to offer the world. Never forget the people we need to keep building and growing, which are our young people.

"Miss Samoa is just another vehicle where we can empower our women and also men and the future of Samoa."

As her reign comes to a close, Moemoana’s commitment to Samoa continues with the Ta fesilafa’i project, and she looks forward to finalising her film and expanding her work in the region as the reigning Miss Pacific Islands.

Her heartfelt gratitude to Samoa reflects a deep love and respect for her people and country.

"It has been a spiritual journey, and I am excited to live here and continue my work."

Moemoana hails from Auala, Asau, and Matavai Safune in Savai'i, Taufusi, Matautu Lefaga, and Vaimea in Upolu.

Moemoana was born in Samoa and raised between New Zealand and Australia. She is the eldest daughter of Frederick Schwenke and Maryjane Mckibbin-Schwenke. Her mother Maryjane is renowned for her Siva Samoa and as a former Miss Samoa and Miss South Pacific in 1997-1998.
