American Samoa voters have chosen new leadership following a closely contested gubernatorial run-off election. Pulaalii Nikolao Pula and his running mate, Pulu Ae Ae Jr. won with 5,846 ballots cast in their favour.

They secured 59.8 per cent of the total vote that was cast.

Incumbent Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and Lieutenant Governor Laapui Talauega Eleasalo Ale garnered 3,925 votes, amounting to 40.2 per cent.

The results, while decisive, remain unofficial until the mandatory seven-day waiting period elapses.

Pulaalii, a seasoned civil servant, brings over two decades of experience as Director of the Office of Territorial and Insular Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

His tenure in this federal position has equipped him with a deep understanding of territorial governance and intergovernmental relations.

Pulu Ae Ae Jr., a retired U.S. Army officer, has spent the last decade managing the Pago Pago Field Office of Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata. He is also a former member of the American Samoa House of Representatives, further reinforcing his credentials as a leader rooted in service.

Governor-elect Pulaalii extended a message of unity in his victory statement.

"We need to come together and heal any wounds or divisions that a long campaign creates in our families and villages. Please be kind to one another. Please let God's spirit propel us forward in the days and years ahead," he said.

Outgoing Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga issued a gracious concession statement, emphasising the importance of democracy and expressing his commitment to a smooth transition.

“When the people speak, those of us who serve at the will of the people must listen," Lemanu stated. "It is how democracy works and best serves our community. To that end, I extend my congratulations to Governor-elect Pulaalii Nikolao Pula and Lt. Governor-elect Pulu Ae Jr.”

Lemanu also expressed gratitude to his team, supporters, and the people of American Samoa, adding: "We came here to serve, and service is bigger than us. Ultimately, this is not about us but about the people we serve. Let us all put campaign differences aside and focus on our duty to support the incoming Governor.

"Let us do everything possible to help him bring American Samoa together for the good of our island as envisioned by our forefathers so long ago."

Lemanu noted that he has reached out to the Governor-elect to begin a smooth transition of administration.

The Governor-elect and Lt. Governor-elect will be sworn into office on 3 January 2025.

Their administration is expected to focus on uniting the territory and addressing critical issues such as economic development and infrastructure improvement.

The election marks a new chapter for American Samoa, with voters signalling a desire for change and hope.

On Thursday, the Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister of Samoa, Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, extended his congratulations to American Samoa for conducting a successful election.

He commended the outgoing administration and the newly elected leadership, highlighting the critical role elections play in democratic nations and the power entrusted to the people to choose their leaders.

Tuilaepa stressed the significance of the administrative transition in American Samoa, noting its impact on Samoa due to the close collaboration between the two governments in advancing development initiatives.

He referenced the various partnerships and agreements between the nations and the ongoing bilateral meetings that strengthen their relationship and shared goals for progress.
