New Zealand company Eden Road Fruit Ltd., based in Richmond, Tasman, is gearing up for the return of Samoan RSE workers, fostering a family-like atmosphere that resonates with warmth and hospitality.

Directors Anna Alexia Sutton (affectionately known as Mama Aulelei), her husband Stephen, and their son Jonah are dedicated to creating a welcoming environment with a touch of Samoa for the returning R.S.E. workers.

As an Approved Employer under New Zealand’s Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme, Eden Road Fruit Ltd. collaborates closely with the Samoan government to provide employment opportunities and contribute to community development in Samoa.

Anna emphasises the familial bond she nurtures with the workers, stating, “I always look forward to welcoming my teams each season; they feel like my own children.”

The history of Eden Road Fruit is rooted in family tradition.

Originally a pick-your-own berry farm established by Stephen's parents, the business has evolved significantly since Stephen studied horticulture at Lincoln University.

Over the years, they transitioned to growing boysenberries and apples, adapting to local developments while ensuring the farm remains a cornerstone for the Sutton family across three generations.

Currently, Eden Road Fruit Ltd. is wrapping up the pruning season with just eight workers remaining, eagerly anticipating the arrival of a new team in November for thinning and picking.

To enhance the experience for the RSE workers, Anna has initiated the creation of a recreation playground designed to foster camaraderie and relaxation.

“It’s a space for laughter and bonding, where we play games that have given everyone unique nicknames,” Anna shared, reflecting on the joy and connection established through these shared experiences.

The new facilities, which include a volleyball court and a badminton area, provide opportunities for workers to celebrate significant occasions such as birthdays and cultural holidays.

Team Leader Konoferenisi expressed the sentiments of many, stating, “We call it our home away from home, and the love we receive here is truly special.”

With accommodations upgraded and facilities enhanced, Anna, Stephen, and Jonah eagerly await the return of their summer RSE teams, committed to ensuring that every worker feels valued and at home.

Eden Road Fruit Ltd. stands as a testament to the strength of community, familial ties, and the positive impact of seasonal work programs.
