New P.S.A. building in the works

The Public Service Association (P.S.A.) is forging ahead with plans to construct a new building in Fugalei, replacing the old and dilapidated structure that has long been an eyesore in town.

They hope to have it up before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.).

This development was confirmed by PSA President, Lealaisalanoa Karameli Tuala, in a recent interview with the Samoa Observer.

Lealaisalanoa detailed that efforts are underway to demolish the old building and prepare the site for the new construction.

The process, however, has encountered several delays. Challenges such as clearing large trees near the site, obtaining necessary demolition and construction permits, and other logistical issues have slowed progress.

Despite these setbacks, Lealaisalanoa is optimistic. "Our builder has assured us that the new construction can be completed within six weeks," she said.

The PSA is eager to move forward, to have the new building ready before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M).

The current structure, which has been deteriorating for decades, has become a hangout spot for unsavoury activities and is widely regarded as a blight on the community.

In April of last year, the old PSA building was ravaged by fire, and since then, its remains have been left unaddressed. The site is currently being used by a local family as a barbeque stand in the evenings.

The PSA represents approximately 600 government workers, who contribute $2 from their paychecks to the union’s independent account. The association’s new building is a much-anticipated project, aimed at enhancing the functionality and the appearance of the area.
