Fugalei road floods again
Heavy rain on Saturday returned with a familiar scene, flooding and traffic chaos in Fugalei.
The main road leading into the town was flooded once again as vehicles, large and small, made their way slowly across.
Most trying their best to avoid the potholes that were filled up last week when the water-logged area became dry.
According to residents and businesses in the area, most of the potholes were temporary fills and they were now looking at the condition of the road deteriorating once again.
Alofa Sameulu, 39, stopped his vehicle before reaching the flooded portion, double-minded if he should risk going through the flooded portion.
“Last week, my vehicle went into two large potholes, so I am a bit wary and worried about the damage to my vehicle,” he said.
“This is becoming a consistent problem. I hope that this time around when the government officials return to office, they will look for a permanent solution.”
A business owner who preferred not to disclose his name said he had his staff clear one of the outlets.
“Leaves and plastic litter had covered two of the outlets close to my business. I had two of my workers clear that up,” he said.
“I saw a woman and her son clearing one of the outlets close to the bridge. I think they were preventing the water from going into their home.
“The authorities should be on the ground because they know every time it rains, this area gets flooded. I am also worried that this constant flooding will lead to a decrease in property value in the area.”
Government offices reopen next Monday and there is hope that this situation in Fugalei will be looked at.
