Moana Pasifika record first Super Rugby win
New franchise Moana Pasifika has recorded its first ever win in Super Rugby with a hard fought 24-19 victory over the Wellington-based Hurricanes.
The match, which was held at the Mt. Smart Stadium in Auckland on Friday, was won in extra time and came courtesy of a try to replacement Danny Toala in golden-point extra time.
It is only the second time in the history of Super Rugby for a match to be decided in extra time.
According to Tagata Pasifika, Moana Pasifika Captain Sekope Kepu said after the match that they had worked really hard in the pre-season and they knew they had it in them.
"We just had to string it together tonight” Mr. Kepu said. “We had to work hard after last week, and we showed pride and passion tonight”.
The game had then come to a tie again after Moana Pasifika's Solomoni Funaki scored a try with a successful conversion by Christian Lealiifano, which would later take both teams into golden point extra time.
Nearly six minutes into the match, Hurricanes' Jordie Barrett put their team on the scoreboard with the first try of the match.
Around 16 minutes after Hurricanes had taken the lead, Moana Pasifika were on the score board following a try to Henry Time-Stowers. Both teams were tied at half time until Hurricanes took the lead again after Josh Moorby's try in the 55th minute of the match.
Moana Pasifika tied the match again with a try from Levi Aumua, with Hurricane's Alex Fidow responding with a try nearly three minutes later, and a successful conversion.
The Moana Pasifika will play against the Blues on April 2. The Moana Pasifika team has been contacted by the newspaper for a comment. The team, which made its debut in Super Rugby this season has players from Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.
