The Apelu Sports organisation has revealed the lucky recipient of the inaugural Callum Jones Scholarship for 2021: a year 7 student at Vaivase Primary School.
"The 2021 Callum Jones Scholarship recipient is Vaaimamao Tuuaga of Vaivase Primary School and she is in Year 7," says Gabrielle Apelu, the founder of Apelu Sports.
"The Callum Jones Scholarship is awarded to a young student between the ages of 12-14 at a primary school. The scholarship criteria is based around education.
"The winners were selected based on a poem competition run in 2020. And who exhibit the values of our organisation which are Respect, Support and Aiga. Opportunities are an important value for Callum Jones who is part of our organisation and who recently passed away unexpectedly and who the scholarship is named after."
The scholarship will be an annual fixture.
"As Apelu Sports was launched in 2020, The Callum Jones Scholarship is and will be an annual award. Part of our organisation's values is Support - Lagolago and part of our efforts is to support in some small way the children who come under our program. The scholarship is for the full school year," she said.
"This is the inaugural year of the scholarship in which we have set aside the award for two deserving children. We are in the process of increasing the number of recipients for 2022. The scholarship covers the recipients tuition fee for the whole year to assist them in their educational pursuits."
Apelu Sports have already rolled out their agenda for 2021, and commenced their outreach programs going out to communities and organisations.
"We have already started our programs for 2021. We have different outreach programs that are not solely based in schools but encompass conferences and training programs for organizations and groups such as the recent Amplify Conference with the Salvation Army Youth," she said.
