Mase's fate with Lakapi Samoa unknown
Lakapi Samoa has opted to stay quiet on the fate of Manu Samoa head coach Mase Mahonri Schwalger. His suspension was supposed to have been the subject of a review this month.
Mase was suspended in late September after he was charged with unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault, and common assault with possible additional charges.
After the charges, Lakapi Samoa stayed quiet but a few weeks later announced that they were suspending Mase with full pay and a review of the suspension would be done in December 2024. So far, nothing has been said.
His first appearance in court early November he denied seven charges of sexual allegations against him in the Supreme Court. He pleaded not guilty to charges that included unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault, and common assault.
Mase succeeded Vaovasamanaia Seilala Mapusua with a three-year appointment, starting in 2024 and extending to the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
This newspaper understands that Lakapi Samoa will commence work on Monday, however, an email was sent to the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun. A response is still expected.
Mase's continued suspension or failure to appoint a successor at the earliest possible opportunity may impact Manu Samoa. 2025 is an important year.
This is the year that will determine if Manu Samoa qualify to the extended Rugby World Cup in 2027. The Pacific Nations Cup after the June and July international window will be used as a qualifier.
