The display of high level netball skills and techniques did not go unnoticed by a group of young aspiring netball players who volunteered for the Pacific Games netball tournament at the Multi purpose gym in Tuanaimato.

Martasha Maua, Rylee Schuster, Katrina Tualaulelei, Rumei Meredith, Sayonara Alalatoa, Kathryn Tualaulelei and April Maua all play netball for their respective schools and clubs.

The youngsters between the ages of 12 and 15 volunteered to be stationed at the games as ball collectors and to keep the floor safe for the players.

Katrina told the Samoa Observer that they thoroughly enjoyed the week-long experience, saying it was a once in a life opportunity.

"I mean it was cool. We don’t get this every single year, it’s once in a life time so we have to enjoy it while we still can and it was a good experience.

"We learnt a variety of skills from the players and we hope to live up to it and also we aspire to represent Samoa in some years in the future, but yes we learnt a lot," she said.

Katrina's twin, Kathryn, together with Sayonara and April added that the tournament provided insights for them as aspiring young netballers who want to represent Samoa in the future.

"It was great exposure for all of us because we’re all young and so we saw some advanced playing throughout the field so it was really good for us to at least catch something, one or two," said Kathryn.

"Actually watch and learn from the moves and it’s really inspiring because as a netball player I would love to represent Samoa one day," added April.

The volunteering gig for the girls was possible due to the school holidays, and despite the girls wanting to spend their holidays relaxing, they said it was a worthwhile experience.

But volunteering for such an elite competition was not easy for the girls.

"Throughout the week, we had to be early on time, and we also wanted to spend our holiday but we had to be here.

"So we always had to be here early and tried to catch the ball and try not to get the ref mad at us. It was really hard and challenging, but we did it anyway," said Katrina.
