The final 12 women who will represent Samoa in netball at the Pacific Games have been selected.

Following the Pacific Nations Cup held in Auckland towards the end of last month, a trial was held to determine the final Games squad.

The team was selected by head coach Seraphine Mataia, as well as the head coach for Samoa's Netball World Cup team Frances Solia.

Netball Samoa CEO Rosemarie Esera said there is a lot of depth in the squad.

“We believe we’ve picked the best team that were there [at the trials]."

She said there is a nice spread of girls, with four based in Samoa, five in Auckland and three in Australia.

They will come together for a short, intense camp in the first week of May, which will happen overseas.

“Mainly because our venue here in Samoa will not be ready," Esera said.

“Ideally we would love to have all our players in Samoa to train, but that’s not possible."

She said depending on funding they are looking at another camp in early June.

Also in June, Esera hopes the Pacific Games netball venue will be ready so they can test the court.

“We are planning to have a exhibition game, here in Samoa, together with the World Cup team."

Because the dates of the World Cup and Pacific Games overlap, Netball Samoa have put together two separate national squads.

The Games squad will all be in Samoa by the July 11, so they get some more time together before the competition starts on the 15th.
