Manu Samoa 7s beat NZ, go to semi-finals

Manu Samoa 7s defeated a star-studded New Zealand team 21-12 in the Cup Quarterfinals of the Coral Coast Sevens in Fiji on Friday. 

Led by Joe Webber, the Kiwis had not dropped a single game until they met Manu Samoa. 

For the Manu Samoa 7s, they started the tournament with a loss, then managed a win and drew their final pool game. The team was pooled with club teams from Fiji.

Manu Samoa 7s will face Mike Friday's Select 7s which feature former Fiji 7s players like Jerry Tuwai, Iowane Teba, South African legend Rosco Specman and former Irish Harry McNulty.

In the other semi-final, the Fiji 7s team faces the Fijian Drua 7s team.

Team Manager, Su'a Hesed Ieremia spoke to the Samoa Observer before their quarter-final clash. He had this to say.

"We made it to the Cup quarter-finals, playing New Zealand All Blacks 7s this evening at 4.55, that'll be 5.55 Samoan time," he said.

"Everyone's in good spirits, and taking the most out of this top premiere 7s tournament in Fiji. All part of our journey. The journey to getting back into the World Rugby's HSBC World Series. So, Fiji is a stepping stone for the next qualifier is the Challenger's Series in Cape Town, South Africa next month," he said.

Six players were not part of the travelling squad due to injuries and other engagements including Vaovasa Afa Su'a, Taualai Panoa, Lavanta Stowers, Mavaega Siole, Naturo Salatielu, and Seutalaga Peau. 

They lost their first game against Bula Ray 7s in a close match 14 - 12. They came back stronger in their second match against BLK Lavidi Brothers 21 - 12. Their third match was a 12 -12 draw against Ratu Felise.

Manu Samoa faces Mike Friday's Select 7s at 1.30 pm (Samoa time).
