Samoa's sailing Olympians have concluded their journey at the Olympic Games with Vaimo'oi'a Ripley placing 43rd and Eroni Leilua placing 42nd in their respective races in Marseille, France.

Vaimo'oi'a Ripley participated in the Women's Dinghy while Eroni Leilua competed in the Men's Dinghy.

According to their interviews with ABC Pacific, they were proud to represent Samoa and fly the national flag high in sailing.

"My goal was to see the Samoan flag up there with the other big nations. Never give up. It's not over till it's over," said Ripley.

"Our ancestors were once voyagers and navigators of the sea and I am just the modern-day version. This is only the beginning and there is a wave of future sailors that follow me," said Leilua.

Ripley is the first ever female sailor for Samoa to compete in an Olympic while Mr Leilua was in his second. Despite not earning a medal at his second Olympics he continues to chase his dream and remind the world that Samoans are the people of the sea.

He believes that the Pacific people have been underrepresented in sailing but his dream is to change that.

Samoa has finished rugby sevens, boxing, judo and sailing and no medals have been won. Five sports including kayaking, swimming, weightlifting, athletics, and wrestling are still yet to finish.

So far, discus thrower Alex Rose is the closest to getting a medal as he has made the finals.
