Samoa Women start Touch World Cup with win
The Samoa Open women's had a great start at the Touch World Cup beating Hong Kong China 10-3 in their first pool game in Nottingham England.
The points were secured by Isabella Nasalio, Bailey Ma Chong, Chrioni Posini, Ella Watkins, and Charlize Fleming, Cody Tuimaseve and Mavelah Pati-Sialapae scoring two tries each bringing Samoa's total score to 10. Ma Chong and Tuimaseve are from New South Wales and currently playing for Samoa at the Touch World Cup.
Samoa led 7 - 1 at half time.
One of the standout players from Team Samoa is Fleming, it was five minutes into the second half and a turnover ball from H.K.C because their player lost the ball forward, Fleming's quick tactic landed her on the score line to secure her second try of the match and added the extra one for Samoa, 8 - 1.
Just two minutes after Fleming's try Hong Kong executed some of its game plan and Lok Ching Sonia Ng adding another point to their scores, 8 - 2.
A few seconds after Hong Kong's second try Samoa's Bailey Ma Chong with her fantastic footwork secured another successful try for Samoa, bringing the scores to 9 - 2.
With less than six minutes to go for the final half, Ching Lam Lok just ran between two Samoan players to secure their third try of the match, 9 - 3.
Two minutes before the final whistle, Isabella Nasalio scored the last points.
Samoa's defence was tight and H.K.C found it difficult to break through it.
A fantastic performance by the ladies in blue, the team comprises overseas and local players. This is the gold medalist team that won the Pacific Games last year after they beat Papua New Guinea in a nail-biting match, 8 - 7.
More than 30 countries are competing at the Touch Rugby World Cup. Samoa is in Pool B with New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, Fiji, the Philippines, Hong Kong China, the United States of America, the Netherlands and the host country England. Samoa will meet the Netherlands on Wednesday, 11 pm Samoan time.
