Samoa marks Mother's Day on Sunday
Samoa marked Mother's Day on Sunday with mothers and families joining church services around the country to celebrate the annual event.
Thousands of mothers from different church denominations celebrated the occasion with special activities or programs. It is a day when mothers dressed and looked their best when attending church services.
Some church denominations had a program of activities or entertainment dedicated to mothers as an acknowledgement of their roles within their families, churches and villages.
Early Sunday morning mothers were seen walking along the road side making their way to church.
The heavy rain did not hinder the spirits of some mothers as they made their way to church.
A mother of seven from Falevao said this year is different compared to previous years in terms of celebration and programs to mark Mother’s Day.
Taliloa Tafili Penani told the Samoa Observer that due to COVID-19 restrictions they were not able to do their usual programs for mothers.
“I am thankful for God’s love that we are able to welcome each day, it is a blessing,” she said.
“With the COVID-19 virus being spread within our communities this has led to a halt of preparations for mothers.”
The 68-year-old said the women of her church were leading this Sunday’s service.
“I am in charge of the thanksgiving prayer hence why I wanted to go to church early," she said. “In terms of gifts and presents, my children presented me with monetary presents to buy whatever I wanted but I only wanted new shoes because my old shoes were worn out.
“I did not want a new dress, these things are not important to me, I believe we should be grateful with what we have.”
Another elderly mother, Telesia Tavita said all her children travelled from their respective villages bringing their husbands, wives and her grandchildren to spend Mother’s Day together.
“It is a family tradition that everyone comes together to have a feast, exchange gifts and spend some quality time,” she added.
The mother of five added that her church will be led by the men.
“Women are treated to songs and programmes led by the fathers. I feel relieved that we are able to all come back to church because I do believe that it is significant to give back the glory to our heavenly Father for his blessings.”
