From the big island of Savaii, 22-year-old Leatuvai Lelevaga Iakopo of Sapapalii and Iva has turned years of struggle, faith, and hard work into success, graduating with her Bachelor of Nursing from the National University of Samoa, in a proud moment for her family.
She was among 497 students who graduated from the National University of Samoa on Wednesday, marking the end of a challenging four-year journey.
Reflecting on her time at university, Leatuvai said one of the biggest challenges was balancing academic demands, clinical responsibilities, and personal life. She shared that there were many ups and downs within her family, school, and life in general, which at times made her journey difficult.
“However, these challenges did not stop me. With perseverance, the support of my family, and my faith in God,” she said, she remained focused on her goals.
Her drive came from a deep desire to make her parents proud and to one day give back to them for all their sacrifices. These experiences strengthened her resilience and determination to succeed.
Among her most memorable moments were her clinical placements, where she applied her knowledge in real-life situations and cared for patients. Being part of a healthcare team and seeing the positive impact of compassionate care on patients’ lives reaffirmed her passion for nursing.
Throughout her studies, she gained important skills such as clinical competence, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and cultural awareness. She also developed emotional resilience and the ability to stay calm and professional in challenging situations.
Leatuvai said her time at the National University of Samoa shaped her into a more disciplined, responsible, and compassionate person. It helped her grow not only academically and clinically, but also personally, strengthening her faith and appreciation for her family’s support.
She encourages future students to stay strong, keep their faith, believe in themselves, and remember their purpose.
“Remember your 'why,' whether it is your family, your dreams, or your passion for helping others, and let that motivate you throughout your journey”
Looking ahead, she plans to begin her career as a registered nurse and continue building her skills in the healthcare field
“I am committed to working hard, supporting my family, making my parents proud, and giving back to them for everything they have done for me. I also hope to further my education in the future and continue serving others with compassion and dedication,” she said
