Damages to the underground cables from Fuluasou to Tanugamanono are the reasons for the power outages, and the Electric Power Corporation is switching to overhead wires to resolve the issue.

Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, this would be temporary, as the main focus will be on the replacement of the underground cables.

La'aulialemalietoa said Fiaga now has 12 reserve generators as backup but the underground cables were damaged.

He said an underground cable at Vaimoso was burned on Tuesday night, and luckily, the EPC was quick to stop the fire from spreading to other cables.

"The workers are working day and night to make sure the overhead wires are in place and then to repair underground cables," the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister also reassures that there is enough fuel for Samoa until June.

He said there is a need for additional storage and reserve tanks. He said the government is negotiating with the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to make it possible.

"We need additional storage and reserve for fuel for future conflicts which could affect fuel supply."
