Descendants and heirs of the Seumanutafa title of Apia have written to Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt opposing the use of the name “Ulumoto’otuamasinave” as part of a chiefly title reportedly to be bestowed on New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

In a letter dated 14 March 2026, the descendants said the component “Ulumoto’otuamasinave” is historically and traditionally connected to the maota and malae associated with the Seumanutafa title and should not be used without the consent of the rightful heirs.

The letter was signed by Tuivaisigano Moroga, Greg Seumanutafa Meredith, Tuivaisigano Sinave, Tauamamanuvao Lemamea Falani, Beatrice Taotoga Seumanutafa-Fuamatu and Rev. Efu Efu.

They said that while the Seumanutafa title is currently vacant, the descendants and rightful heirs remain living and had not been consulted on the use of their family name, house or traditional titles in connection with the matter.

“We therefore wish to make it clear that we do not support the use of the component of the title ‘Ulumoto’otuamasinave’,” the letter said.

According to the descendants, the name is directly tied to the maota and malae connected to the Seumanutafa title of Apia and carries historical and traditional significance for the family.

They stressed their objection was not directed at Luxon personally.

“We hold great respect for the Prime Minister of New Zealand and fully support the recognition of his relationship with Samoa through a chiefly title if the village so wishes,” the letter said.

However, they urged those involved to select another title that does not interfere with titles and historical names linked to the Seumanutafa lineage.

“Our intention in making this statement is not to create division, but rather to protect the integrity, history and dignity of the Seumanutafa title and its descendants,” the letter added.

The issue arises amid wider debate over the planned bestowal of a matai title on Luxon during his upcoming visit to Samoa.
