The 2026 Price Control Order, the first new order since December 2024, was released last week and came into effect on Friday, 6 February, setting wholesale and retail prices for a range of essential food items.
Wholesale prices for chicken legs (15 kg) are $97.20 in Upolu and $102.20 in Savaii, with retail prices at $8.00 per kilogram in Upolu and from $8.50 per kilogram in Savaii, Manono, and Apolima.
Turkey wings (14 kg) are priced at $188.80 wholesale in Upolu and $198.70 in Savaii. Retail prices are $16.20 per kilogram in Upolu and from $17.70 per kilogram in Savaii.
The Price Control Order is an important tool used to keep the cost of essential goods and services fair and affordable. In 2025, no updated order was in place, leading to wide price differences, with some shops charging much more than others for the same products. The situation raised concerns, especially for low-income families struggling with the rising cost of living.
During this period, major wholesalers said they were setting prices based on the last government price order, which had expired in December 2024. Clyve Westerlund from Ah Liki Wholesale explained that their pricing continued to follow standard industry practice. The authorities also encouraged consumers to report any inconsistent pricing, with receipts, to the Ministry
