Authorities in Samoa are actively searching for the body of a 53-year-old fisherman from Fa'ala Palauli in Savai'i, who went out fishing late Friday night but failed to return to shore.

The disappearance prompted an investigation by local police, with efforts underway to locate the missing man.

Police Commissioner Auapa'au Logoitino Filipo confirmed the ongoing investigation and told the Samoa Observer that the search operation is in full swing.

According to reports from local police in Savai'i, the fisherman had gone out to sea accompanied by his son and another individual.

Search operations began on Saturday, with police teams in Savai'i working alongside specialised divers who travelled from Upolu to assist in the recovery efforts.

The authorities have not yet provided additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the fisherman’s disappearance.

Auapa'au took this opportunity to issue a public safety warning, urging fishermen and the general public to exercise caution when venturing into the sea.

He emphasised the importance of being mindful of the weather conditions and the strong ocean currents, which can present significant risks to those out on the water.

The ongoing search has brought the community together as both locals and authorities continue their efforts to locate the missing man. The police have urged anyone with information or who may have seen anything unusual in the area to come forward and assist in the investigation.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers fishermen face, especially when weather conditions turn unpredictable or when venturing far from shore.
