Prosecution amend charges against hostage taker
A man who allegedly held his ex-wife hostage for more than three hours after shooting police inside a supermarket is still remanded in custody after his counsel Shane Wulf requested the Supreme Court on Monday for more time.
Mr Wulf asked for another week's adjournment to obtain full instructions on the amended charges from the prosecution.
In his last appearance before Tuesday, the prosecution informed the court that they would be finalising more charges against Liu also known as Liu Tao. After the charges were amended, the accused now faces 12 charges.
Judge Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma accepted the request and adjourned this matter to 3 March. The prosecution will also provide their objection to bail.
The prosecution is denying bail for Liu because of the outstanding warrants of arrest from previous matters of domestic violence before the court.
Justice Fepuleai adjourned this matter without the accused's plea to the final charges against him and awaiting negotiations with his lawyer on the amended charges made by the prosecution against him.
When police tried to approach Liu inside his shop, he shot and wounded a police officer at the scene.
Members of the Chinese community including the Chinese Embassy helped the police to negotiate the hostage situation which was resolved after more than three hours.
The court has given Mr Wulf two weeks to file a bail application before the matter is heard again.
Lui faces three charges of attempted murder, one of possession of a dangerous and illegal weapon, as well as charges relating to firing guns into the air that day.
