The first prosecution witness in a murder trial told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that the 25-year-old accused confessed to him the grizzly details of how he killed his 45-year-old stepfather.

On trial is Eneli Luane who is alleged to have killed his stepfather in Aleisa on 27 January 2024 by attacking him with pieces of broken bottles and a machete.

Constable Tiemu Arona Su'a told the court he had worked for the Criminal Investigation Department Homicide Squad for four years.

Constable Su'a revealed that on the night of 28 January 2024, the defendant was taken into custody as a witness for the incident at Fiaga, Aleisa.

He said while he and the accused were smoking outside of the CID office, Luane suddenly admitted to killing his stepfather.

Constable Su'a read the written statement the accused made at the CID office on the night he was taken in as a witness.

Constable Su'a added that when the accused gave him admission of what he did, he told his superior, the late Sergeant Peniamina Pelise.

He said the accused made an official statement saying that it was he who killed his stepfather by using some broken Taula bottles and a machete.

In the written statement that was read out by Constable Su'a, Luane elaborated that he was angry at his stepfather for being drunk and talking to other people at a shop in Aleisa while he was waiting for him outside.

The accused in his statement went on and said he argued with his father on the way home and from thereon, his stepfather was so angry at him and tried to assault him that night.

The accused said in the statement that was why he broke a Taula beer bottle and used the sharp broken piece to stab his stepfather's head and a machete to strike his legs.

Luane in his statement went on and said he saw his stepfather lying on the ground unconsciously then he ran to a church minister's garage and put the machete back after wiping the blood off with his t-shirt.

He said he then threw his shirt in a nearby bush so the police could not find it.

Luane in his written statement said the machete was from the church minister's garage and he was using it in case someone did something to him and his stepfather on the way to the shop on the night of the incident.

Constable Su'a said the accused admitted to killing his stepfather out of anger. He said the accused was not forced or promised anything in return for his confession.

The prosecution is planning to get the witness testimony of the pathologist from Fiji who did the post-mortem examination on the deceased last year through a video link on Wednesday morning.

Prosecuting the matter is Leinafo Taimalelagi while Luaipou Ann Matalasi is the defence counsel. The case is before Judge Justice Leiataualesa Darryl Clarke.
