MV Express II under maintenance
The MV Express II, one of Samoa’s key inter-island ferries, is currently out of service for maintenance, leaving passengers and residents eagerly anticipating its return.
In its absence, the MV Fa Sefulu (40) has stepped in to assist the MV Lady Samoa III in transporting travelers between the islands of Upolu and Savai’i.
While it remains unclear when the MV Express II will be operational again, many are hopeful it will resume service before the festive season—a busy period when inter-island travel peaks as families reunite and holiday plans take shape.
The MV Express II is highly valued for its capacity to accommodate more vehicles than any other vessel on the domestic route. This feature has made it particularly important for residents and businesses in Savai’i, who rely on efficient transportation for goods and vehicles.
Many have expressed their concerns and hopes on social media, underscoring the ferry’s importance in daily life and economic activities.
Recognising the growing demand for reliable inter-island transportation, the government has announced plans to enhance the domestic fleet. Minister for Works, Transport, and Infrastructure, Olo Fiti Va’ai, has announced efforts to secure a new vessel for the Upolu-Savai’i route.
The Minister, accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of Samoa Shipping Corporation (SSC), recently travelled to Australia to inspect potential options for purchase. “We are actively looking for another vessel to service the domestic route,” Olo stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing transportation needs.
As the holiday season approaches, travelers and residents eagerly await updates on the MV Express II and the progress of plans for a new ferry.
The MV Express II, a $10 million vessel, was commissioned in 2021. Meeting international safety standards, along with insurance, tax duties, and other essential expenses to bring the vessel to Samoa, amounted to $3.5 million. Originally built in Malaysia in 2013, the vessel measures 49.95 meters in length and 13.8 meters in width, with a maximum cargo capacity of 473 tons.
