Money and alcohol cause for holiday violence
Expect an increase in violence and abuse cases over the holiday period in Samoa because of alcohol and financial stress says the Samoa Victim Support Group.
SVSG said their support services will be available throughout the holidays as experience tells them there will be higher cases of violence and abuse with alcohol, financial distress and poverty being the main contributing factors.
According to the SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang, they are getting more than 20 calls per day, ranging from families fighting, troubled teens, domestic violence and sexual abuse.
“The SVSG Helpline service, established in 2013, is an essential service that is often time the last resort for many women and children whose personal safety is endangered by abusive partners or family members,” she said.
“Working closely with the Samoa Police’s Domestic Violence Unit, the SVSG helpline is the first step in the process of removing these victims from situations of harm.
“In preparation for this time of year, staff from both organisations work closely together, coordinating their services to meet the anticipated rise in demand. “
Siliniu said their response is on standby and ready to provide support if the need arises.
“While each situation is different and requires specialist support by SVSG case workers and the police, the reasons for the increase in cases are very clear to the team at SVSG.
“It is about the increase in alcohol and financial strain.
“We are mindful that we have a role to play during this season. Our people must know that there are people here to help and support them.
“If you see violence being committed – please, give us a call our work is confidential, we work together with the police and we know that we can help to save a life or to then that’s the most important thing.”
