No complaint yet on NUS prom brawl
There was no official complaint lodged with the Samoa Police over a brawl that broke out at the National University of Samoa prom on Wednesday night.
This was confirmed by the Deputy Police Commissioner, Papali’i Monalisa Tiai-Keti in response to queries from this newspaper on Friday.
Papali’i however confirmed that police officers responded to a call from students who were at the prom held at Gym 1 in Tuanaimato.
Papali’i said according to a report from their team, there were no students at the scene when they arrived.
“I can confirm that there has been no official complaint filed,” Papali’i said.
“We have seen the video that has been circulated on social media, but nothing has been reported yet.
“Someone called police when the fight happened, but when our team got there, the students who were involved and the majority of those who attended the prom had already left.”
Video footage from the brawl outside the venue have been shared online, showing N.U.S. students engaging in a brawl.
Other students were seen just standing and watching the fight while others tried to intervene and break up the fight.
The video showed that the fight started between two boys before close to 10 other boys intervened and also threw punches instead of trying to pull them apart.
Students who were at the prom claimed that the fight happened towards the end of the prom.
A few students have also voiced their frustration on social media in regards to the cost of tickets at the prom.
Some complained that in previous years, the students would use their student identification cards to attend and there was no cover charge.
However, for this year, the entrance fee for students was $25 tala while outsiders were asked to buy tickets for $60 tala.
Some complained about the expensive tickets, claiming the food and drinks finished early.
There were also videos of minor fights and arguments outside the venue being shared on other social media platforms.
