$60 tala banknote wins top award
Samoa’s $60 tala banknote that commemorates the nation’s 60th Independence and honoured the first and current Prime Minister has been awarded the "Best Commemorative Banknote of the Year”.
The Central Bank of Samoa in a press statement confirmed De La Rue announced the award in an event held at the High Security Printing (HSP) in Sri Lanka.
The front design of the banknote features a portrait of Samoa’s first female Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mataafa and on the reverse side shows the first Prime Minister also the father of the current leader, the late Fiame Mataafa Faumuina Mulinuu II.
The 60th Independence commemorative banknote is unique as it portrays a father and daughter holding the leadership position of Samoa during the 60 years journey from its independence.
The Minister of Finance, Lautimuia Uelese Vaai acknowledged the award and its importance in marketing Samoa in the most positive way.
He also noted its contribution in promoting Samoa ahead of the biggest conference it will play host to in 2024, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and the first time for a Pacific nation to hold the talks.
“It is significant for Samoa in recognition of women in politics and gender equality,” said Lautimuia in an interview with the Samoa Observer.
On the $60 tala banknote it not only features Fiame's portrait it also has the signature of the first female Governor and the then first Minister of Finance, Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molioo that showed accomplishment of women in politics and development.
The Governor of CBS, Maiava Atalina Ainuu-Enari said the Central Bank of Samoa is extremely proud of the achievement and acknowledges De La Rue Currency for partnering with the Bank in designing this high quality banknote, marking a significant milestone in Samoa’s history.
“The Bank also extends its appreciation to Reconnaissance HSP Asia for recognising Samoa’s new commemorative banknote, placing Samoa’s currency amongst the best in the world,” she said.
The accolade of Best Commemorative Banknote of the Year at HSP Asia stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of C.B.S. and De La Rue in creating a banknote that seamlessly marries artistry, security, and historical significance.
Maiava extended gratitude to the High Security Printing Asia event for acknowledging and celebrating excellence in banknote design and security.
