Funefeai Tuiala Tiotio has been appointed as the new Deputy Director General for the Ministry of Health.

Funefeai steps into the role previously held by Dr. Atoa Glen Fatupaito, who was farewelled by his colleagues last week.

Dr. Fatupaito, who served as the Deputy Director General for Hospital and Clinical Services, concluded his term with the end of his contract.

Despite his significant contributions to the role, Dr Fatupaito re-applied for the position upon the expiration of his contract but did not get the nod for a renewal.

The vacancy for this role was officially announced by the Public Service Commission (P.S.C.) in April of this year, with the application window closing on 7 May. The salary grade for the Deputy Director General position is set at $119,812.

Funefeai, the newly appointed Deputy Director General, brings with him a wealth of experience from within the ministry.

His extensive background includes notable roles such as Assistant Chief Executive Officer for the Professional Development and Registration division and Head of the Radiology Department. Funefeai's longstanding tenure in the ministry positions him well to assume this pivotal role.

In addressing the change in leadership, Director General of Health, Aiono Dr. Alec Ekeroma, was approached for comment on the decision not to re-appoint Dr. Fatupaito.

Aiono briefly noted that the recruitment process was managed by the Public Service Commission, stating, "The recruitment and selection process for contract officers is under the PSC's and then the cabinet’s ambit."

Efforts to reach Dr. Fatupaito for his perspective on the matter have so far been unsuccessful.

The transition to Funefeai Tuiala Tiotio is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives and continued dedication to the Health Ministry's objectives. As the new Deputy Director General settles into his role, the ministry looks forward to his contributions towards enhancing hospital and clinical services.
