The excitement was palpable as the Teine o le Fetuao women's kirikiti team from Tiavea emerged victorious at the Samoa Teuila League, held recently at the Methodist Compound in Faleula.

This year’s International Kirikiti Samoa tournament, which commenced last week, culminated in a thrilling final on Wednesday evening.

The Teine o le Fetuao team triumphed in the women’s division, defeating the I'a o le Vai team from Tanugamanono.

Tanifa o le Vao from Sili, Savai'i reigned supreme in the men's division.

In an exclusive interview with the Samoa Observer, Ulu Uno, the captain of the victorious Teine o le Fetuao team, shared her immense pride and satisfaction.

She praised the Samoa Teuila League's decision to include a women's category for the first time this year.

Ulu Uno expressed her gratitude to God for providing their team with strength and guidance throughout the tournament. She also recognised the unwavering support from their village and their friends and family residing abroad.

Ulu revealed that assembling a team for this tournament was a significant challenge.

"This was our first participation in a kirikiti tournament and the first time we've organised a team," she explained. "Traditionally, kirikiti is associated with men, so the announcement of a women's division was groundbreaking.

"My sister, who lives overseas, contacted me after the Methodist Conference in July and offered to sponsor our team. With her financial support, we were able to bring the girls together, organise ourselves, and prepare thoroughly for the tournament."

With their victory now secured, Ulu Uno expressed the team's commitment to future participation in kirikiti tournaments and their intention to continue promoting the game within their village.

She proudly noted that all the team members are from Tiavea, underscoring the local spirit and community involvement in their success.

The tournament also saw commendable performances from other teams, including the Tama o le Vaigafa from Gautavai, who were pleased with their achievements.

The team expressed their appreciation to the organising committee for reviving the Kirikiti Samoa and facilitating this year’s league.

However, Faaofonuu Oka Tuisafea, the captain of Tama o le Vaigafa, suggested that the committee consider enhancing the prizes and awards for future tournaments.

He emphasised the considerable effort and financial investment required to prepare and support teams during the competition, highlighting the need for a more robust recognition system to match the dedication of the participants.

The Samoa Teuila League has once again proven to be a vital platform for celebrating and advancing kirikiti, providing opportunities for both men and women to showcase their skills and foster community spirit.
