Lona Youth secures national volleyball title
The Lona Youth volleyball club of Fagaloa has been crowned this year's champion in the Men's Division 1 competition after beating "Tama ole Mau" in the final.
Lona Youth outgunned and outmuscled their opponents convincingly winning by two straight sets to Tama ole Mau's nil.
The coach of Lona Youth, Reverend Siaosi Samoa said in an interview that his team battled hard to reach the finals for this year's National League.
"We have been training nonstop since the end of last year to compete in this year's event, and all the glory goes back to our heavenly father for his guidance and for giving us the victory over Tama ole Mau today," Rev. Samoa said.
The club also took the title in the women's competition after winning a nailbiter against the Friends volleyball club.
Rev. Samoa, who is also the coach for the women's team, said he is very proud of the girls’ effort in reaching and winning the final.
"I'm really proud of what both teams have achieved today, and I know that our village Fagaloa is also ecstatic about the results of the tournament,” he said.
“I want to acknowledge their support and their prayers while we were battling in today's games.”
In Division 2 of the men's tournament, the "Spicy" volleyball club of Siusega went up against local powerhouse "Fale ole Fe'e" from Magiagi in the final.
"Fale ole Fe'e" won the first set of the match but "Spicy" clinched the second set to send the match into a third and final set.
In the end the team from Siusega proved too strong for the "Fale ole Fe'e" to win the decider 15-13.
Captain of Spicy, Taylor Crichton excitedly said he was very happy with the hard-earned victory against the team from Magiagi.
"We dug deep in the third set and the boys really gave their 120 per cent effort,” he said.
“I praise and thank God for his wisdom and guidance because without him we wouldn't have been able to secure the win.”
The President of the Samoa Volleyball Federation, Leute Faamanumataipule, said that the tournament kicked off in January this year with 16 teams vying for the women's title, 32 teams competed in the men's development category dubbed Division 2 while 16 teams participated in the men's main Division 1 competition.
