New Caledonia has swept all the gold medals in squash at the XVI Pacific Games.

Three gold medals was won through their mixed doubles team, Christelle Nagle and Yann Lancrenon, their women’s doubles Kareen Marechalle and Nagle, and men’s doubles by Enzo Corigliano and Lancrenon which brings them to winning seven gold medals throughout the squash competition.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Lancrenon acknowledged his family who are his biggest supporters with his coaches and team.

The 21-year-old from New Caledonia said that he started playing squash at the age of 12.

“The reason for me to play squash was because of the family atmosphere that the sport had. 

“I have seen some of the guys here with us win everything for the past couple of years and I took them as an example and tried to become one of them,” he said.

He said that after representing his country the 2015 Pacific Games and won gold in the team events –that set him on a path to come back four years after and win every medal he could.

When asked how his team won so many medals he said it was through consistency of training.

“It’s about putting so much effort and determination with your heart in all the training you undergo but consistency it is a very important aspect.

“Squash is physical, tactical, mentally and all those aspects make any player love the sport so much,” he said.

He said that he kind of felt sorry for other teams including Samoa because they deserved at least one or two gold medals the same as Papua New Guinea.

“It could have gone either way especially in the women’s finals but thanks to hard work, team spirit and a bit of luck that got us through and we are all going to celebrate and have a big party.

“But I hope to represent my country again because of my love for squash,” he said.
