The Samoan national wrestling team bagged four gold medals and two silver at the end of the second day of competition at the Oceania Wrestling Championship in American Samoa.

With day two wrapping up, Samoa has a total of six medals, four gold medals and two silver medals.

On day one, Shane Palemia won a gold medal in the U20 97kgs. The young man was an unstoppable force on the mat and showed that he had the potential to take his talent to the best in the world.

Also on day one of competition, Jeremiah Tipamaa and Gaku Akasawa settled for silver medals.

With day twoʻs completion on Saturday (Samoan time), Gaku Akasawa in the senior men's 79kgs and Shane Palemia for the U20 and senior 92kgs took out the gold medal stamping Samoa's dominance in the sport in the region.

They are currently in the last day of competition. According to Gaku, everything is going well and they look forward to putting Samoaʻs name on the board.

Wrestling was a sport in which Samoa competed in the Olympic Games in 2024. Gaku Akasawa was the only rep who had qualified. He said he feels that the next Olympic Games could have at least three Samoans competing.

He said the sport was relatively new to the region and Samoa was perhaps the leading nation in the Pacific when it came to Greco-Roman wrestling.

He said he hoped that the sport could also be included in the Pacific Games giving other Pacific nations to come up with teams and creating a completion that could rival the best in the world.

They acknowledge the support of all their sponsors, friends and families. They hope to make Samoa proud by the end of the tournament.
