Moataa pips Marist 29-22, retains shield
Moataa Senior A successfully held on to the Challenge Shield after upsetting Marist Rugby Club 29 - 22 in a strong come-from-behind victory in the Apia Rugby competition on Saturday.
Moataa's strong attack denied Marist possession and did not allow them to score a single point in the second half.
Marist led 22 - 5 at half-time. Unfortunately, Marist was unable to hold on to their lead in the second half. Moataa controlled possession and used their heavy forward pack to dominate the game.
Moataa captain Harry Hanipale said during half-time they realised that there were changes that needed to be made. As the defenders of the shield, the pressure was on them.
"No other feeling other than happy and proud of my boys for a job well done. Glory to the man above, that we did come out with the win today. I am also humbled that my team has chosen me to lead the team and we won our first game," he said.
"I believe teamwork was the key to our successful match today, there was a lot of pressure. But we managed to settle it down and play the game throughout the final seconds of the game."
Marist skipper Tagiilima Ripine Asiata said mistakes cost them the game.
"First off, congratulations to Moataa for the win, thank you for a good game. There is a lot of work that needs to be done. We made mistakes which led to these results," he said.
"But it's time to reset and we go again next week. We learn from our mistakes, but all in all appreciate my team's effort. It is our first game and also our first time to be part of the Apia Rugby Union 15 a-side tournament."
Harry also acknowleged the support from their Church Minister and village of Moataa. As well as their families and friends who came down to the HPU field, Tuanaimato to cheer them on. They look forward to the next challenger of their shield and will ensure that they bring their A-game every week.
