Vaimo’oi’a shines at Oceania competition
Vaimo’oi’a Ripley is making waves once again as she competes in the 2025 Oceania and Australian Open and Youth Championships held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) in Brisbane, Australia.
Racing in the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) 6 class, Ripley demonstrated her talent by securing 4th place in the silver fleet and 47th overall out of 85 competitors, affirming her position as a proud ambassador for Samoa.
“Competing here has been an incredible experience,” Ripley shared.
“Every race reminded me of why I sail—to represent Samoa, connect with the Pacific community, and inspire others to chase their dreams. I give thanks to the Lord Almighty for His continual protection and guidance. I am also deeply grateful to my sponsors and family for making this journey possible."
Fresh from her historic debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Ripley brought unwavering determination and skill to a week-long series of 12 races that challenged competitors with fluctuating weather conditions, from strong south-easterly winds to lighter tactical breezes. Each race served as a testament to her versatility and resilience on the water.
Ripley’s participation was supported by key sponsors, including Vaikobi, NB Sail Sports, Woollahra Sailing Club, Middle Harbour Amateur Sailing Club, and the Meredith-Evans family and friends, each contributing to her success at this elite level. Additionally, she extended her gratitude to her Pacific Island neighbours from Fiji, who provided support with their coach’s assistance during the regatta.
A highlight of the event was the complimentary daily coaching sessions led by renowned ILCA coach Dan Blight. These invaluable sessions covered key aspects of racing tactics, management, and strategic insights that bolstered Ripley’s preparation and performance.
“The coaching was appreciated,” Ripley noted. “It helped me approach each race with local knowledge and confidence.”
The 2025 Oceania and Australian Open and Youth Championships symbolize an important milestone for the Pacific Islands' representation in competitive sailing. Last year, Samoa stood alone as the Pacific Island nation represented, and Ripley’s ongoing presence emphasizes the rising prominence of Pacific sailors on the international stage.
With her eyes set on future challenges, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Ripley remains steadfast in her commitment to elevate Samoa’s presence in the sailing world.
