The curse was broken and history was created at Apia Park on Saturday after SCB Apia Maroons beat Tepatasi 22-18 in the finals of the Kings of Rugby on Saturday, providing the perfect centennial celebrations gift for Apia.

Apia Maroons won the Kings of Rugby for the first time since the inception of the tournament. The team has made various finals without success.

It was an emotional evening for Apia Maroons and their supporters. Tears were shed by parents and relatives of the players and the village sang "Ua Faafetai" for their teams hard work and effort.

The game was tough. Both teams showcased talent and heart.

SCB Apia Maroons captain, Ionatana Tino Su'a said there were no words to describe the joy.

"We've been training in the rain and sun for this tournament. Our game against our brothers from Tepatasi was not an easy one," he said.

"The important thing for us is we finally won the Kings of Rugby tournament. It is definitely the best gift for our 100-year celebration."

Su'a urged the younger generation of Apia to play rugby and represent their village.

"I hope that our youth and our young generation will use their God-given talent wisely. If it's rugby, then that's great so they can represent our pride and village," he said.

"You cannot get anything without going through hardships. Taking this opportunity to thank all our family and supporters who came out today and supported us through it all. Wishing our club as well as Samoa rugby the best 100-year celebration."

Tepatasi squandered an 18-10 lead to allow a fired-up Maroons to score twice and take the lead. It was the Maroon's relentless defence that stood out and not allowing Tepatasi to score any more points until the final whistle.

Meanwhhile, No Idea was named the Queens of Rugby after defeating Savaii Queens 24 - 7.

Assistant coach for No Idea, Suititi Michelle Ailao said the team trained for six weeks.
