Opeloge is Olympics flag bearer
Weightlifter and medal prospect Don Opeloge will be the flagbearer for Team Samoa at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
This was announced at the farewell function for the team hosted by the government on Tuesday.
Acting Prime Minister Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio wished the Olympians well in their stride to win medals for Samoa.
"I take this opportunity, on behalf of the honourable Prime Minister, to convey our best wishes as our Team Samoa is about to depart our shores for Paris, France for the 2024 Olympic Games," he said.
"In only a few weeks, the world will see Samoan athletes and officials representing their small island from the Pacific, with pride and joy. On behalf of the Honorable Prime Minister, Cabinet, Members of Parliament and all of Samoa, wherever you may be, we wish Team Samoa the very best for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
"May God guide you, protect you, and strengthen you in your journey to success. Thank you and wish you all the best."
He acknowledged the hard work of the athletes.
Samoa has qualified in nine sports, discus thrower Alexander Melei Rose for Athletics, Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali for Boxing, Will Tai Tin for Judo, Tuva'a Mako Hugo Clifton and Samalaulu Fuatino Te Aho Clifton for Kayak, Eroni Leilua and Vaimo'oi'a Astrid Ripley for Sailing, Johann Strickland and Kaiya Brown for Swimming, Gaku Akasawa for Wrestling, Manu Samoa 7s, Iuniarra Sipaia and Samoan flag bearer for the 2024 Paris Olympics Don Opeloge for weightlifting.
Some of the athletes are already in Paris, while others await their departure according to the schedule of their sports.
First up in action will be the Manu Samoa 7s
