Weightlifting drafts young blood

New junior weightlifters have been drafted into the national squad by Samoa Weightlifting Federation Inc. president Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork to ensure the development and availability of athletes.

He believes that there is more talent in Samoa.

"As for former athletes who have retired and have moved on to fulfil other plans with their families, the sports continues. We have upcoming athletes and now with school back on, we will continue our search and select athletes we know have the talent and thrive in this sport," Tuaopepe said.

"But for our team's position for this year, we leave it to God to help us through. There are many challenges and competitions ahead but we will see. I believe that our team is well prepared.

"That's how life is, no one will stay forever. As you have witnessed, there are new faces in the team but don't be fooled by their young faces they are stronger than you think. They may be small but they sting, we are invested in building up their sporting careers.

"Perhaps there will come a time when you will see these young athletes compete. But as coaches and trainers, we are doing our job with all our athletes."

With the launching of the Oceania Weightlifting Institute and Academy this month, he is determined to train his team and ensure they reach their goal. He also added that an accommodation specifically for weightlifting is very much needed.

"We cannot risk weightlifters coming to Samoa and staying in hotels. There is the 'discipline' aspect of the sport that lifters need to adhere to, so if they stay in hotels they will be free to go out to clubs and stray. There are rules and regulations they need to abide by as part of our institute. But for now, there is enough room to accommodate those who are coming."

The Oceania Academy is scheduled to open on 15 February.
