The Don Bosco Technical College at Alafua recently launched its hospitality facility which will be used by its students for newly introduced courses.

A church service was held on Friday to bless the new facility which was followed by its official opening ceremony. The event was attended by the teachers of the College and students.

According to the school administrator, Grace So’o, the plans for the project started due to the increasing number of students yet there were not enough classroom space for them to deliver some of the new courses.

Ms. So’o told the Samoa Observer that this led to a decision to seek funding for the construction of classrooms and kitchen.

She confirmed that some of their partners in Australia, through the Australian Salesian Mission Overseas Aid Fund (A.S.M.O.F.) provided funding.

“The total cost of the project is $209,100 which includes the purchase of ovens, fridge and also paying the construction work,” said Ms. So’o.

“The construction period of the project is 12 weeks.

“The aim and focus of this project will not only be used for the Hospitality programme but also for other small functions such as birthdays and other things needed by the students especially for their practical work.”

Ms. So’o also said this new facility will cater for some of the newly introduced courses such as cookery.

“So far, the students who have registered are close to 300 but at the moment there are still students coming.

“I think last year or the last two years, we noticed that the number of students was increasing.”

She also said that Don Bosco offers five various fields of studies such as mechanic, welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical.

“But we have new courses to offer such as painting, sewing, and cookery. We started last year with cookery but we hired a qualified hospitality teacher who will be fronting the Hospitality Programme for the first time.”

The Don Bosco Technical College Administrator also acknowledged all their partners from Australia.

“I want to thank the Noel and Carmel O’brien Family Fund; St John Bosco Parish in Engadine and also A.S.M.O.F. I also want to thank the College Principal, Mane Su’a for spearheading the project from the beginning.”
