Wet weather to continue
Samoa can expect partially cloudy skies and some showers as a trough of low pressure in the vicinity of the islands is expected to provide some instability in the nation's weather on Monday.
The Samoa Meteorology Division forecast the poor outlook on Sunday.
According to the forecast for Sunday and Monday, a trough of low pressure lies to the Northeast of the group while a southeast and variable winds affects the islands.
“A strong south-westerly wind is directing upper-level moisture over the islands,” read the statement.
“Light and variable winds with surface heating would develop some convective developments over highlands in the afternoon and would be the main source of showery activities for the now cast period.
“Meanwhile, a trough of low pressure analysed within the vicinity of the islands is expected to provide some instability for tomorrow [Monday].
“Therefore, expect partly cloudy skies with some showers. Brief moderate falls and few thunderstorms.”
Furthermore, a forecast for Tuesday through to Saturday, revealed that the Tropical disturbance TD03F which intensified to a depression on Saturday lingers near to the southwest of the Fiji group and the system may likely be upgraded into a Tropical Cyclone by Monday.
“The ridge of high pressure to the Northeast of the islands would maintain the dominant Northeast wind flow and light winds associated with a trough of low pressure that links to TD03F.
“This trough of low pressure coupled with an upper-level ridge moving from the West would provide some increased moisture content and instability levels for some scattered showers for the remainder of the outlook period.”
For the marine outlook, wave and swell heights remain below the advisory threshold through Monday.
“However, the increase in wind strength over the area and the development of TD03F at the beginning of the new week will likely elevate wave and swell activities to reach the Advisory threshold.”
As of 5pm Sunday, there were no valid warnings or advisories issued for Samoa.
The Fiji Meteorological Service issued a severe weather update for Tropical Depression TD03F on Sunday through its official Facebook page.
“Tropical depression TD03F was located about 300 kilometres west-southwest of Viwa and 340 kilometres west of Nadi at 6am today [Sunday].
“TD03F is moving east towards Fiji at about 15 kilometres per hour.
“The centre should pass about 225 kilometres southwest of Viwa at 6pm today [Sunday] and about 190 kilometres southwest of Nadi at midnight tonight [Sunday].”
The Fiji Meteorological Service stated that based on the intensity forecast, the system is expected to be elevated to category 1 today [Sunday] during its passage.
