Air NZ includes 'ie faitaga' in uniform

Air New Zealand has revealed a new uniform collection that pays homage to contemporary fashion and cultural heritage with a standout feature for the people of the Pacific—the inclusion of the ie faitaga, a traditional lavalava-style garment worn widely in Samoa and across the Pacific.
The airline unveiled its refreshed look last week, calling it a “celebration of Aotearoa artistry and creativity.” Designed by award-winning New Zealand fashion designer Emilia Wickstead, the new collection brings together modern tailoring with Pacific and Māori influences in a vibrant showcase of national identity.
“The inspiration to include the ie faitaga came from the Air New Zealand team based in Apia, Samoa,” a spokesperson for Air New Zealand said. “Recognising the cultural importance of the ie faitaga, the team saw an opportunity to better reflect the community they live and work in.”
The garment, traditionally worn by men in formal and professional settings in Samoa and other Pacific cultures, was introduced to the uniform lineup following a proposal by the Apia-based team. The move marks a significant milestone for cultural representation within the airline.
“The goal was to create a uniform element that honoured local identity while fostering a stronger connection with the community,” the spokesperson added. Staff reaction, particularly from those in the Pacific, has been deeply positive.
“The response from Pacific staff, particularly those in Samoa, has been overwhelmingly positive,” said the airline. “Messages of support have poured in from our colleagues across Air New Zealand. The reveal, which featured Apia-based Fa’alua Sene Ta’ala in the campaign, was a proud and emotional moment for the team.”
To ensure authenticity, the design process involved close collaboration with the Apia team from the outset. The team prepared a formal proposal and shared their vision with leadership, helping ensure the garment’s cultural significance was honoured.
“This ensured that the ie faitaga was introduced in a way that was respectful and true to its cultural roots,” the spokesperson said. “Leadership engaged with the proposal early on, and the collaboration that followed helped bring an authentic and meaningful addition to the uniform collection.”
According to the airline’s official press release, the full uniform range features 30 pieces, with styles that reflect the modern Pacific traveller and include elements inspired by kākahu huruhuru (traditional feather cloaks), Polynesian motifs, and New Zealand landscapes. The new uniforms will be rolled out across all customer-facing teams by late 2025.
