The Editor-in-Chief of the Samoa Observer, Gatoaitele Savea Sano Malifa, has been arrested by the Police and detained at Police Headquarters.

It is believed the veteran journalist is suspected of D.U.I. (driving under the influence) and was detained Thursday, and is not expected to be read the charge by the Police until Friday.

The Police began putting up roadblocks in selected parts of Apia on Thursday afternoon, in the wake of two motor vehicle accidents over the Father's Day long weekend, which have been connected to alcohol consumption.

A vehicle accident last Saturday evening involving two cars led to the death of two people with the second person succumbing to his injuries on Tuesday.

Another crash involved a Government-plated vehicle which left the driver with serious injury with Police investigations still underway.

According to the Road Traffic Ordinance Act section 40 subsection (5), a person who is convicted of an offense against drunk driving is liable to a jail term not exceeding five years or a fine not exceeding 50 penalty units.
