So far, the Government of Japan through its Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (G.G.P.) programme has supported 206 projects in Samoa worth US $17 million (approximately SAT $41 million).

The full extent of Japan's donations were mentioned in a statement issued by the country's Embassy on its funding support for Palauli Sisifo College School and Falefa Primary School.

The Japanese Ambassador to Samoa, Terasawa Genichi signed over the grants under Japan’s Grant Assistance for G.G.P. to the above representatives of the two schools under Japanese Fiscal Year 2020 allocations.

The Palauli Sisifo College school committee received a grant of up to US $209,903 (approximately SAT $526,000) to construct a new hall building for gatherings and assembling activities.

While the Falefa Primary School Committee received a grant of up to US $135,525 (approximately SAT $342,000) for urgently needed renovation work for the existing school building that house nine rooms, as well as the existing toilet blocks to enhance the safety of school facilities for its students. At 17 years of age, the building is deteriorating due to exposure to several cyclones and adverse weather conditions.

According to Ambassador Terasawa, the G.G.P. assists grass-roots non-profit organisations including educational, medical and non-governmental organisations in addressing development needs in the areas such as education, health, water supply and the environment.

Japan’s G.G.P. support projects in the human security sectors at the grass-roots level.

During one of the signing ceremonies, he said that for Falefa Primary School, there was an urgent need to carry out renovations for the existing building due to its deterioration from exposure to past cyclones and adverse weather conditions.

Furthermore, the event demonstrated Japan’s firm commitment towards improving the learning environment in Samoa.

“I am confident that this project will ensure the best of resources and equal opportunities are available to students to accomplish academic excellence.

“Under the G.G.P. programme, Japan continues to provide small and flexible grants to support development projects at the grass-roots level that is specifically designed to address basic human needs.

“It is my belief that such assistance will greatly contribute to the improvement of everyday life of the people of Samoa.”

Last week, five recipients including Aana No.1 College, Samoa Recycling and Waste Management Association, Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority received grants for various projects.
